Trusty Gal wedding: Intro

January 31, 2010

Obviously my biggest event to date has been my own wedding, and I am quite proud of it. If I had coordinated everything correctly, I should have blogged along the way while we were planning it. Since that did not happen, I am going to feature different aspects of my wedding every week or so.

Just for a little basic information. My husband and I got engaged in July of 2007 and we hit the ground running with planning. First was picking a date, and since we knew that we wanted a date in October, we had to coincide with the University of Tennessee’s football schedule. Once we found the only away game weekend, we started looking for vendors and found that this was a highly sought after date. We ended up having the ceremony in the church I have gone to forever, and the reception in the Sunsphere downtown, an icon in Knoxville. I wanted our colors to coincide with the season but I did not want my wedding to scream fall with leaves and pumpkins, so we chose to use chocolate brown, burnt orange and ivory as our colors. The rest of the details, you will have to stick around to see……

Taming the sweet tooth

January 24, 2010

So I have a huge sweet tooth, which explains why any diet that prohibits dessert is not for me. I found a recipe a few months back and tried it today. They are peanut butter chocolate bars, but with a few tweaks was made a little friendlier to the waist line. I made them today and think they are quite yummy!

Fun times drinking wine and raising money

January 23, 2010

My sorority alumni club holds an annual wine tasting as a fundraiser for our great philanthropies. Last year I was the co-chairperson for the event and I was thrilled with the way it turned out. We had a fabulous speaker who was educational, yet entertaining and taught us all about Chilean wines. Our food was perfectly paired with each course of wine. Our silent auction was so much fun and raised us so much money.(People got so competitive that they started to try to bribe my husband and I). Here are some of the pictures from the event and a picture of the invitation I designed.

Cake Decorating: Take 1

January 20, 2010

I took a cake decorating class last spring and had so much fun. I always loved to bake so it was really a matter of getting the right tools and learning how to make my cakes prettier. This was the result of the first weeks class. I had no direction other then pick a couple pretty colors and use some of the new tools I had just learned to use.

By degree, an interior designer. By practice, a woman of many …….parties.

I come from a family of nurses so when I was younger and people asked me what I wanted to be, of course I said a nurse. When I was about 10 my mom told me that I needed to be something more creatively inclined. One day while I was watching HGTV, I saw a home design show and said, “Sure, I can do that”. Well, sure I can go to college for it, but will there be any jobs so that I can do it. Nope, and there started my predicament.

Shortly after graduating and moving to a new city, I realized that the economy was a scary place and not very welcoming to someone with my degree. It took me months to get a job and just a few more to lose it. I took a job in childcare making a lot less then what I should, but at least making something. This however left me feeling empty and useless. My only solace was with planning my wedding. I loved organizing, having a purpose, being able to still create something.

However, it could only last so long. Afterward, I felt a void. This coupled with the fact that everyone kept telling me how great I was with planning my wedding, I started down the path to become an event planner. I had always enjoyed planning get- togethers, and my pretend birthday parties. The only times that I feel a purpose is when I have a project……..whether it is baking or crafting. So, I am dedicating this blog to my foray into event planning, baking, crafting and decorating…..all the creative ventures in my life. Thanks for following my journey!
